What Is Everyone Reading These Days For Themselves?

What is everyone reading these days for themselves?

I need to pick up reading again and need a good book for myself. I go through phases of reading and need to jump back on the reading road. Post what your reading, what you have read and what you recommend-

Thank you

Janet Evanovich Notorious Nineteen http://www.evanovich.com/novels/plum...ious-nineteen/ Laugh out loud funny!

Ann Rule Too Late to Say Goodbye http://authorannrule.com/Books_Home_Page.php True crime type book...LOVE her short stories

I often read more than one book at a time and have several on reserve waiting to be read. I will read anything that is interesting but still have my favorite authors too. :)

mema 02-12-2013 11:11 AM

I borrowed my sister's Fifty Shades of Gray-just the first book-aaaaaannnd, it's been sitting on my dresser since Thanksgiving:cool:. I have no recommendations from personal reading, but have heard that this series is great!

The only thing I read right now is this forum, papers my kiddos bring home from school, and a few blogs (thanks BC-dog shaming, people i want to punch in the throat, etc:p) oh and Ivy and Bean with dd.

SilverSabre25 02-12-2013 07:16 PM

I still need to Read Rick Castle's first book, Heat Wave. Got it for Christmas and keep forgetting to read it.

I've also been going through a lot of my old SciFi and Fantasy on my shelves.

Mercedes Lackey, Diane Duane, Tamora Pierce.

Read Divergent recently--LOVE IT! Can't wait to justify getting Insurgent.

Reread Harry Potter recently too. I've been thinking about getting Meg Cabot's Heather Wells mysteries as a nice dose of "brain chocolate".

I read a lot, can you tell?:Sunny:

AfterSchoolMom 02-13-2013 06:11 AM

I discovered a Kindle sale for a mystery publishing house, so I've been reading funny mysteries lately:

Front Page Fatality by LynDee Walker
Diners, Dives, and Dead Ends, and Last Diner Standing by Terri Austin
Lowcountry Boil by Susan Boyer
Portrait of a Dead Guy by Larissa Reinhart

Love them! happyface

Right now I am bouncing between the original Sherlock Holmes, Free Range Learning, Dumbing Us Down and the Beginner's Running Handbook. They basically describe me, a mystery lover, unschooler, and wanna-be-runner (starting to train for a 1/2 marathon).
We are going to the beach this weekend, so I am looking for something a bit "lighter" to read while there. I may look at the ones you listed, AfterSchoolMom. Thanks!

Just finished Under the Dome by Stephen King. I just started the Christ Clone Trilogy book 1-In His Image 30 min ago.

MyAngels 02-14-2013 06:14 AM

I recently read the first Jack Reacher series book by Lee Child. Right now I'm reading one of Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta books. Can you tell I like series books :)?

theycallmetaytor 02-14-2013 06:25 AM

I go through off and on reading phases too...recently read the 50 shades seeries (in 4 days). I was a little disappointed. Started reading The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein and got sidetracked...so I went with a good ol' Nicholas Sparks book- The Notebook. I know EVERYONE loves that horrible movie, but read the book...it is 600 million and a half times better. I watched the movie once after I read the book and will never watch it again

Joyce Meyer's book Change Your Words, Change Your Life: Understanding the Power of Every Word You Speak

likethis LOVE Joyce Meyer. If you are a Christian, you should like her page on Facebook so you can read the wonderful status updates she makes each day. Such a neat woman of God.

It's a Christian book we are going through in my Bible study group. By myself, I am reading The Power of a Praying Woman.

unfortuantely I have a Nook. :) Thank you for the offer though! I'm thinking I will justify it this weekend. DH is working 51 hours again this week. Which means I am solo parenting for the majority of the week. Definitely deserve something nice for me as a reward :P

I suppose I'm not an avid reader as much as a browser. As a self-proclaimed DIY-er I can't resist good art books, home decor and repurposing manuals. I love poetry books such as The Gift and some of Rumi's works translated by Daniel Ladinsky. Also, I'm a sucker for books about marriage, budgeting, spirituality and family matters (i.e. Things I wish I knew before I was Married, Good Cent$ (written by two stay at home moms that learned how to cut costs with coupons, energy efficiency strategies, etc.), Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God by Francis Chan and His Needs, Her Needs for Parents.

Above All, The Bible. I have an awesome NIV for "Busy Moms" that has 5 min. reflections relevant to our hectic lives and schedules that keeps me afloat :-)

Happy Reading!

Erma Bombeck, Forever Erma. I wanted some light, easy reading while on vacation recently and this fit the bill perfectly. Her writing is truly timeless.

I love both of those series. I was a little upset when they cast Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher for the movie.

I just finished "The Casual Vacancy' by JK Rowling. It took me 2 months to finish it! I'm glad I read it but it took forever to get into it.
Right now I'm reading "Son" by Lois Lowry. It's about the mother to the boy in "The Giver". So far it's a really easy read and it's good!

Rachel 03-05-2013 10:57 AM

I really liked Son, the first part much more than the second two.

CedarCreek 03-25-2013 11:17 AM

Just finished Margaret Atwoods "The Handmaids Tale".

I was pleasantly horrified if that makes sense. It was enthralling. I tried to explain it to dh but I ended up wanting to punch him..poor fella. it was the book talking.

Creating Connections - Family Support Groups by Joan Laurion

Words will Never Hurt Me by Sally Northway Ogden

and I've got Bambini : The Italian Approach to Infant/Toddler Care by Lella Gandini, Carolyn P. Edwards and Carolyn Edwards on the way. :D

Bookworm 03-27-2013 05:21 PM

If anyone loves a whodunit with a bit of the supernatural and somewhat of a police procedural, try Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's Agent Pendergast novel. He is one of the best characters ever written.

I just finished Maeve Binchey's last book "A Week In Winter" :( I always found her books to be a bit old fashioned but a good rainy day cuppa read. I enjoyed it and got a little teary at the end. RIP Maeve.

I also just finished "Bared To You" It was one of those "if you like 50 Shades you might like this" Well, I HATED 50 Shades so I resisted. However picked it up yesterday on a whim and didn't put it down until this morning. Much, much better than 50 Shades - if you are in to that sort of book. ;)

I've also been doing a lot of re-reading lately - A Wrinkle In Time, Harry Potter, etc.

Most of the times I am reading out story books for my kids but this time I bought myself a novel by Thomas Hardy, The Mayor of Casterbridge. It was good but a bit too long. Anyways I loved reading something new- other than the kids' story books.

Josiegirl 06-15-2013 04:57 AM

I'm reading The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. I love it.
I'm a huge fan of Jodi Picoult! Very enthralling author!

I just finished The Women of the House by Jean Zimmerman.

Next up, Life After Life.

Thriftylady 04-21-2016 05:52 PM

Right now two Amish novels. I have been feeling kind of down lately, and they help me stay grounded in my faith. That helps me have hope for things looking up. They always do, but sometimes reading the right thing helps.

I read a lot. I complete a book every day to two days but I haven't read anything in awhile that I absolutely loved. I've read several that were pretty good or mediocre but none that made me stay up too late to read one more chapter realizing I completed the book.

I read this series years ago but forgot to note the author and then spent years trying to track down the title. I absolutely loved the series but especially the first book
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...the_Wilderness

I also loved this book. It's a lighter read but with some meat to it without sex, vulgarity or crime. I just found it refreshing. I enjoyed the other books in the series but enjoyed the first one the best

I'm reading Under The Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. It's interesting, eye-opening, and appalling all at the same time. It sickens me to think what some of the young girls grow up with in polygamous communities.

NightOwl 04-28-2016 07:18 AM

Fyi, there's a Facebook page called the Free Book Nook. They post every single day with links for free Kindle books. And you don't need a kindle to read them, just the free app.

:)~Anyone ever heard of, or watched, "Real Housewives of New York":D? Well, I'm reading a book by one of the housewives, or one of the former housewives, right now..."Leggy Blonde: A Memoir" by Aviva Drescher. It's light reading. ..Perfect for summer, to take to the beach or lounge by the pool withlikethis.

"With true courage, Aviva tells the story of how she lost her foot in a barn accident at the age of six and the numerous—sometimes bizarre— attempts to reattach it. After a trip to India to be “cured” by a famous mystic, young Aviva learned to use fashion and style to draw attention away from her prosthesis. She fled to Paris in her early twenties, where she transformed herself into a wild club chick and danced on tables with the crème de la crème of the big-hair supermodel era". http://www.amazon.com/Leggy-Blonde-M.../dp/1476722110

:)~I recommend the book "People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil" by M. Scott Peck MDlikethis.
"In this absorbing and equally inspiring companion volume to his classic trilogy—The Road Less Traveled, Further Along the Road Less Traveled, and The Road Less Traveled and Beyond—Dr. M. Scott Peck brilliantly probes into the essence of human evil.

People who are evil attack others instead of facing their own failures. Peck demonstrates the havoc these people of the lie work in the lives of those around them. He presents, from vivid incidents encountered in his psychiatric practice, examples of evil in everyday life.

This book is by turns disturbing, fascinating, and altogether impossible to put down as it offers a strikingly original approach to the age-old problem of human evil

I love to read a variety of things but my favorite is fantasy along the lines of Terry Brooks and JRR Tolkien. Right now I am reading the second book in a new fantasy series by John Gwynn. The first book in the series is called Malice and the second is Valor. If you like epic fantasy you'll like this series.

Since I work in a childcare center I also love to read children's books. Some of my favorites ( which the kiddos also love) are Pete the Cat, the Llama Llama books, Splat the Cat, and Dr. Seuss.

Josiegirl 02-13-2017 02:31 AM

I'm a huge Harlan Coben fan and just found another similar author that I love. I read No Time For Goodbye by Linwood Barclay, very good book if you like mystery.

This one is on my cart on amazon :)
Just read Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult adn Waking up White by Debby Irving for two different book clubs I'm in. Both were really good.
Also recently finished Homecoming by Yas Gyasi which was at times hard emotionally to read but was a great book!

Currently reading "Conversations with God" by Neal Donald Walsh. Great read so far!

I am not a big fan of fiction so if anyone has any non fiction recommendations I would love it! :)

I think this is the one about the Amish. It's been a long time since I've read it so I'm not sure if there was a nurse in it.

I really like Jodi Picoults books. Some of my favorites are My Sisters Keeper, Nineteen Minutes, and Vanishing Acts.

My all-time favorite book is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. What an incredible story!

I just finished My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrick Backman. I found this book while looking in the library for his other one called a Man Named Ove, which I can't wait to read(on waiting list).

If anyone has read this Grandmother book I would LOVE to get your opinion about it! It started off very strange to me because I'm not much for a fairy tale type book. But it turned into something beautiful, moving(quite tear jerking at times)as life seen through an almost 8 yo little girl's eyes. It was very well written and unique. Made me love a lot of the characters!!

Josiegirl 03-26-2017 04:29 PM

Another book I'd recommend, read it within the past month, is The Life We Bury by Allen Eskin

Some fav books of mine that I've read recently or am currently reading...

"Never Split the Difference"
A book on negotiating as if your life depended on it, as told by the CIA's #1 hostage negotiator.

"The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F@ck"
It's not a book on being indifferent, but on how we use what to give a f@ck about.

"Problem is You, Solution is You"
Very short read, by Swami Dayananda Saraswati.

"Red Platoon"
Firsthand account of the thirteen hour firefight at the Battle of Keating by Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha.

I am reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. I remember hearing about the case when I was a child. I saw this book in the bookstore the other day so I just thought about buying it and giving it a read.
