Default Better Than A Christmas Present

I got 2 compliments this week that were better than Christmas presents, which is a darn good thing, because none of my parents brought me so much as a peppermint. ;-)

I got a call on Monday night from a co-worker of one of my moms. He said I came highly recommended and begged me to take his child. I don't have an opening, so I couldn't, but offered some drop in hours. It's nice to know that she's saying nice things about me.

Today, one of my single moms came in really upset with just over half of my money. She said that everyone's checks were shorted and they weren't going to fix it until Monday. I believe her, this is a rotten company and not the first time they've pulled weird stunts. Anyway, since I haven't seen her child this week and only saw her a couple of days last week (daddy visitation), I agreed. I told her I was refunding 2 days for this coming week anyway (she pays every other Tuesday-one week behind and one ahead) since I was closing on Saturday and Monday, and she has to work. I asked if paying me was going to leave her enough money and she said "Oh yes. I have $40 to last me till then." I gave her back part of her money and told her we could fix it next week. She asked if I was sure because she didn't want any problems. I was the best sitter she had ever found and her daughter really loved us. I told her it was mutual and to have a nice Christmas. She left a bit teary.

I'm just starting, and while I don't have any openings, it's nice to know that I'm getting a good reputation in this small town and have a decent waiting list. That means more than a candle or a gift card.

Edited because from the comments, I realized this sounds like I'm patting myself on the back. I'm not, I'm no saint. I wouldn't have done it for my other parents. This girl is young, a single mom, and has very little support. She's trying so hard, and jobs are scarce in our area. She's stuck working for a crummy company that takes advantage of their employees. I was just trying to explain what led up to the compliment.

Congratulations! It makes you feel good doesn't it?

I believe that a good reputation and staying full by current client recommendations is the best testament for your business. It can be rough the first few years.

I've been in business for 22 years and I only take referral clients now. I think that is why things run so smoothly (business-wise) because you get like minded people. People aren't going to recommend their daycare to someone they don't like or kids they don't want their own kids around. They want their their friends and co-workers kids here with their kids
