Book Club - Reviews / Suggestions>More New DCK ???'S Advice Needed Please
SunshineMama 11:15 AM 06-24-2013
I posted earlier about dck, and have a few more questions. (It is her first day, and she is 13 months old).

Whenever I leave the room, (to grab a diaper, get another baby out of bed, etc), she cries. I just got my 5 month old out of bed and brought him down (I was gone 30 seconds total, and talked to her as i was walking away and back). She cried, and then wanted held when I got back, and would not stop crying. I didnt pick her up bc I had to attend to my 5 month old, and I had to nurse my baby, but he started crying because her screaming was bothering him.

She was due for nap in 15 minutes anyway, so I just laid her in the pack and play for nap #2, and she is still crying and screaming. I have gone in and rubbed her head and told her it is naptime, and left, and will go in again in 10 minutes if shes still up.

Here are my questions:

1. How do you deal with separation anxiety with new dcks?

2. How do you handle a dck's screaming, affecting your own baby? (Shes new, so I know there will be an adjustment period). He didnt want to eat bc she was crying.

3. Is CIO with 5, 10, 15 minute intervals appropriate for a 13 month old? The mom told me that she can never get her to nap at their house, but that the old sitter could get her to nap for a few hours each day.

4. Things will get easier, right????

Also, how much should I mention to mom?

I dont want her to worry and think her child is screaming all day and miserable, and panic her, especially if this is just an adjustment period. DCG seems happy playing, it's just when I leave that she seems to have issues.

I'll give it a shot

4 weeks ago I started a 14 month old and then a week later another 14 month old . The first few days with them were ok, but then the fit hit the shan. They would both stand at the baby gate from the daycare room and cry/scream bloody murder while I cooked/cleaned in the two adjoining rooms. They could see me the entire time.

1. If I was in another room I would just talk to them sweetly while I was doing whatever it was I was doing. They were also getting to the point where they wanted to climb on me constantly. I would just say "oh yes, I'd love a hug!", give them a quick squeeze, turn them around, and then say "thank you so much!". Eventually they were pretty satisfied with just the hugs. They are also to the point now where they will come to the baby gate every once in awhile and fuss for about a second and then turn around and go play. Thankfully, my two figured it out pretty quickly, but it did take about a full week before they started catching on.

2. Sorry, I don't have experience with this one, but I'm getting ready to take on a 2 month old towards the end of July and would love to hear what the others have to say.

3. As far as nap time goes, my two were a wreck, also. Today they fell asleep for the first time within 15 minutes of laying down in their PNP's. And their PNP's are only 2 feet apart, so to me this is major improvement! . I'm not really sure how we figured this one out, though... I just lay them both in their PNP's at the same time and DCG talks to herself for awhile... and DCB slowly sinks down until he's asleep. IDK how I did it, TBH Probably had nothing to do with me

4. YES!!!

Good luck! The advice I received from this forum is what saved my sanity

This thread helped me a lot, although it doesn't pertain to the two I have now. Hope it helps!

Thank you, it's encouraging to hear that it gets easier. I have had dcks with these issues before but they were much younger, and I suppose I have been really lucky with the other children around that age.

Are your dcks taking 2 naps or 1?

She took a 1.5 hour nap at 10am this morning, and has been down for 1 hour so far this afternoon...does that sound about right?

They're both taking a 1.5 hour nap in the afternoons... sometimes they sleep longer, but neither of them nap in the mornings.

ETA: I think my DCG would take a morning nap if I let her. Her parents want her down to just the afternoon nap and that's ok with me.
