What do you consider an excessive and/or persistent cough?

Coughing 5 times in an hour, 10 times, 15, times, etc.

Or another definition

If they cough so much they gag, can't eat or can't sleep.

I'm more looking for a productive cough. Chesty cough. Any of those and they don't stay.

A clearing of the throat.... I'm ok with. An occasional cough. Fine.

I also look at the child as a whole. Any other symptoms?
Once I get to know a child, I can tell by looking at them when they aren't feeling well.

When it's accompanied by fever and/or misery, or I strongly suspect that the child has something dangerous such as TB, whooping cough, etc. Those are the only times I'd send home for cough.

I have a strict illness policy. A persistent cough here is a cough every 15 minutes or less. They spread like wildfire and I don't want that fire!

Well child only preschool. Same goes for runny noses. Persistent runny nose/green or yellow nasal discharge.

We have no cough policy! so far the cough we have has spread like wildfire. Most of the daycare is coughing and so are the teachers. Just a cough, nothing else!
