Daycare Center and Family Home Forum>Getting Cheap Gak Stuff Out 0f Hair
MarinaVanessa 03:33 PM 04-16-2012
DCG came in this morning with dried stuff in her hair. I was told that it was cheap gak stuff that she accidentally got in her hair. It's not real Gak though (slime stuff) but a cheap immitation stuff. I think it was clear with glitter stuff in it (like the ones that you get from the little machines or the .99 cent store). It looks like glue and glitter dried up in her hair and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the clump out. It's not water soluble, they tried running warm water through it and combing it out at home and I tried it here at DC but it's not working.

I've tried ice (like gum) and now I'm going to try leaving some conditioner in there for about 10-15 minutes (like how you get extension glue out). Any other ideas? She already has missing hair from an accident from when she was a baby and I'm afraid they might have to resort to cutting the stuff out which will mean cutting a large chunk of hair out , it's right on the top of her head near her scalp. I'm willing to try (and suggest ideas for them to try at home if anything more potent than conditioner is needed) anything so please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

My hubby says try WD 40. He's used it on his hands so it may work. I'm hoping the conditioner does the trick for you.

Oh that's awesome. I don't know why I didn't think of that. I just tried the conditioner so in 15 minutes if I can't comb it out then I'll suggets the WD40. I have some too somewhere I think. I'll wait until she gets picked up to ask if they want to try it. Thanks.

Sometimes using ice on Gooey stuff in the hair works by hardening it.

Thanks. The conditioner didn't work even after leaving it on for 30 minutes so I tried baby oil, then the ice then even peanut butter (i remember trying this once on a cat that got caught in a sticky mouse trap) ... none of it worked or even softened it a little. I mentioned at pick-up for them to try the WD40 and they said they would and if that didn't work they'd try Goo Gone so I'll know tomorrow if it worked or not, I was too chicken to try either here at home . Thanks!

It's not gooey anymore ... it's hard and clear like dried school glue

Sounds like it's going to be the "snip". It will grow. I bet they won't get that stuff again. Yuck!

We've made the more homemade stuff in our center and it stained the carpet. Even though the kids play with it at the tables, when you've got a lot of them, somebody always ends up carting some across the room. Some of the little guys can be pretty sneaky.

Hopefully the rest of her hair is long enough that they can pull it up around the bald spot and make a pony tail. At least it's nearly summer. Once it starts growing in they can cut it all short and she'll be cool as a cucumber!

Hey - I wonder if that's what happened to this Star's daughter! Either that or she's trying to make this the new summer style for girls!
Edit: Ah.. it's a cultural thing - hadn't read the article just looked at the photo.

sorry to tell you, but you have to cut it out. My dd thought it was like play doh and put it in her hair, nothing worked so we had to cut it out, but what was worse she was playing on her brothers bed and got it on the comforter, to this day, its still there, 4 yrs later. No matter how much I wash it, it just doesn't come out.

Curious to know....did they get it out? If so, what did they use?

I might need to know this later.....just in case....

PEANUT BUTTER! It's a miracle. Need a good shampoo after...but it works wonders. Just rub it in. (No, I am not joking)

OK...never mind...just read that didn't work either...WOW!

Nope ladies, it didn't come out

They tried Goo Gone but not the WD40, they didn't have any.

So far we've tried
- Warm water
- Conditioner
- Peanut Butter
- Baby Oil
- Ice
- Goo Gone

I'm going to try a few more suggestions today like the Mayo and white vinegar but I'm still chicken to try the WD40 . I have permission to try it but I'm reluctant.

I really don't want them to have to cut it out and neither does her uncle (she lives with him). As a baby she had hot liquid spilled on her head and she has a scar that covers most of the left side of her head. The hair at the top of her head is used to comb it over the bald spot so that it isn't so noticable and guess where the goo stuff is stuck ... yep, right at the top of her head. If they cut it out then they won't be able to use the hair to cover her bald spot and her hair there grows so SLOW (there's scar tissue on the top of her head too).

Oh well, thanks ladies. I'll try the mayo and the vinegar and see what happens. If it was really the Gak stuff or homemade stuff made from Elmer's glue then Goo Gone would've worked. This stuff was a clear slime with glitter that came in an egg with her easter basket. I'm just glad it happened at home and not here at daycare .

That sounds like the stuff I bought the kids for Easter from Target. The egg says ANKYO on the bottom and it's made it China.

Gas, turpentine, nail polish remover and WD-40 will most likely break it down but I would have the fire department there just in case.

Maybe its time to cut all the hair off and start over?

Ok so the mayo and the vinegar didn't work either and I have accepted defeat. They did try the WD40 at home and it didn't work either. At this point they are so determined to save her hair that they've resorted to freeing her hair one hair at a time . They've started at the bottom and have gotten about 1 1/2" free in 2 days. They're willing to start at the bottom and work their way up and I say power to them. I just clip the clump up and out of her way so it doesn't get in her face when she plays

Moral of the story: There is no kryptonite for the cheap glittery gak stuff from Target. Do not get it in your hair or clothes.

is it in a place where they can maybe lay her on a table and sort of chip it to break it out? NO I dont mean hammer her head, but if it's lower down maybe they can just break it up a bit?

I would say maybe pour olive oil on and let sit for a few minutes but pour it on where the goo and hair meet (so it can get underneath).

comb it gently, and put rubbing alcohol on it. The rubbing alcohol should dissolve it a bit.

Yes I did try the vinegar but that did not work. I even left it on the clump (between a folded paper towel moistened by vinegar) for 15 minutes. The stuff didn't even soften a tiny bit. The clump starts near her head but hangs down about 6 inches. It's about a 1" section of her hair near her scalp and she got the stuff in her hair close to her scalp all the way down to the end of her hair (about 6").

I'll relay the info about the olive oil to her uncle. He has managed to free up the ends of her hair (not sure how) but I'll recommend having her lay down and them cracking the stuff loose away from her hair. That's a great idea. This stuff is HARD like dried up crazy glue or something.

My granddaughter had dried slime in her hair, and her mother tried everything she could think of. I had a sample of industrial hand cleaner called Bombshell (company is Sunrise), that I tried on it. I left in on for about five minutes, then combed through it in small sections. It did a great job. Bombshell, and other similar products, can be found at any pipe supply store.

I know this is an old thread but my ds just went to a Mad Science birthday party where he made his own "Gak" (slime). They recommended glycerin to remove it. It can be found in the health and beauty department.

It might just be startch and water, thats what we used in my curriculum class to make cheap gak/gunk (only $3). It dries really fast when left alone but melts in your hands.

I think it would probably be the same as getting dried gum out, some home remidies for gum out of hair:

Cocoanut, veggie, olive or baby oil
Butter
Peanut-butter or peanut oil (if she is not allergic)
Mayo
Toothpase
Ice
"Goo begone" (its used to get sticker/gum resedue off of hard services)

Solution found- u need running cold tap over the gak and tease it out with your fingernails - it takes a little while but works especially well with wet gak and doll hair

Old post, but ideas are always good!

Don't know if this would work on Gak.....but years ago I worked for a store that sold sculptured glass. Some of the pieces were hot glued onto mirrors to make them shine. If we wanted to change a piece of glass and mirror, all we did was spray Windex on it and it came right off. I wonder if Windex would have the same effect on Gak as it does on hot glue blobs?!

Dawn dish soap and patience. I started from the side and slid the gook slowly down the hair while it was lathered in Dawn dish soap. Took a little while but we were able to get it all out.

Eureka!

It goes against logic, but squeeze the gook INTO the hair and strain out to the ends. It comes out, saving hair, clothing and skin from chemicals. And relatively quick and efficient.

I applied almond butter to the gakky stuff, and it didn't work. Then I poured white vinegar over the almond butter/gak, and it melted away.
combed it out, washed and conditioned, and GONE!

Be careful of the stinging effects of vinegar dripping on delicate skin or scrapes, ouch.

My dd came home from school with a huge clump of the ungodly stuff in her hair, from root to tip. It was dried hard as a rock. Thanks to my level-headed sister, it is 100% out. The solution used was Dawn Dishsoap and vinegar. Warm water was applied as we worked the goo out piece by piece. Her beautiful hair is saved! Good luck!

OH MY GOSH!!! Vinegar and Dawn dish soap worked to get home made slim (elmers glue and tide mixture) out of a 10 year olds hair! I wasn't very optimistic, but within 30 minutes we had it all out (and it was a big glob)! Thanks so much for this post. I just soaked the hair in the vinegar and dawn (equal parts) and then combed it out a few strands at a time. Thanks for the post it was a life saver!

I just googled how to get this stuff out. Found a general answer and went to town. I used good off and conditioner. Slid most the goop down her hair strands and conditioned and combed out the rest! Good luck if this happens to you. I thought it would be more of a nightmare but only took about 30 minutes

And its natural. no chemicals.u

My granddaughter got the whole batch dumped on her head. We tried coconut oil and then goo gone. Neither worked. The thing that worked was a combo of blue dawn and white vinegar. Made a batch and laid her up on the counter with her head over the sink and sprayed the mixture into her hair and rubbed it in. In a few minutes it started to liquify where we could rinse it out. Giving her a bath with a good hair wash now. It was pretty miraculous.

My daughter put Slime in her hair (glue, baking soda & contact solution) I tried everything! Vegetable oil, conditioner, goo gone, etc. I worked some clarifying shampoo into her hair and let it sit for a minute and the slime turned into a sludge and I was able to brush through her hair with a detangling brush and then a comb which got everything out .
