Default Stye Problem in Toddler ~ Should I Be Worried?

I have a DCG (14 month old) that has been with me for 1 month now. She was a temporary situation and is moving away in 2 weeks. Her first day she had this red bump on one of her eyelids and the mom told me it was called "Chalazion"... she said it was basically a stye caused by ingrown eyelashes, but not contagious. I never heard of this and so just took her word for it.

Every week she has been here, she has had some type of stye only on her upper eyelash area. But last week she came with a big pink swollen stye under one of her eyes. The mom said she thought maybe she hit her eye during the night... I dont know about that. It looked pretty narley.

Anyway - I finally just looked up styes on google, and I see all over the internet that they are really contagious. I have been washing her hands a lot and I sanitize my toys and things daily so I'm thinking my other kids are safe for now.

Has anyone else had experience with a problem like this? Do you make them get a dr's note for a stye? Should I not be letting her come to the daycare with it? I wish I had looked into this sooner. Now she just has a couple weeks left here so thats good. Any advice on the subject would be appreciated?

Two of my daughters had this happen. They were given medication to put on it so it didn't get infected. Warm washcloths helped also. The doctor said it was ingrown eyelashes.

Was it considered contagious? Or just a discomfort to them?

It wasn't contagious. It was uncomfortable, but the warm washcloths helped alot. It took a couple of days for the eyelashes to come through.

You can always ask when she went to the doctor to find out it was no contagious. If you are worried about the larger pink area under her eye you can tell her she needs to go to the doctor with a not stating it's not a contagious stye. It will clear your mind and it's just you keeping all your daycare kids and you safe. Does it feel great having all your toys cleaned??

Thats a good idea. I'm hoping that if she comes tomorrow that it will be gone. But if it looks bad, I'll definitely do this. Yeah it feels great having clean toys, but such a pain cleaning them every day

Sounds like an allergy kid. My friend growing up used to have them routinely but she was an allergy kid, always rubbing her eyes. I was under the impressiong it was an infection type thing from rubbing dirt into it.

I've only had one once and it didn't feel or look good. I don't think they are contagious unless it's from conjuntivitis (pink eye).

I've always gotten a couple a year since I was in middle school. I always thought it was something caused from my make up or not keeping my make up brushes clean enough. Then recently my 3 year old daughter got one. Her eyes and lashes are identical to mine. Doctor also said it was ingrown eyelashes and that because we both have a really thick long eyelashes it's likely to be something that could happen routinely. We just keep a warm washcloth on it and after a couple days it went away. It's not contagious just uncomfortable.
